How do I try out for the team?
Please read the following information carefully about trying out for the Ridge Swim Team:
We try to give any student who would like to participate a spot on the team. However, with limited pool space, this is not always possible. We need to keep the team between 55-65 swimmers. (men and women). Therefore, there is a certain set of fundamental skills each swimmer should have before joining the team. These include: Ability to technically complete all four strokes, flip turns, and diving off the blocks. We have a very large team and we do run tryouts.
It is a tough process deciding who will make the team and I certainly dread making cuts. (Hopefully I don't have to!!) We will have time trials during the first four days of practice, and based on those times, as well as our observations at practice, we will make the final decision. Each individual swimmer will be personally notified about whether or not they made the team after the fourth day of practice.
Our time trials this will be in late November. We will be observing your stroke technique and endurance on Day 1. The next two days will consist of a time trial for all swimmers. Your time trial will consist of a 50 free and a 100 IM.
We expect you to try your best. Time trials will be an indicator of technical skills and endurance and will be a great starting point for best times. In past years, in order to make the team, the girls would need to be under 30 seconds in the 50 free and under 1:20 in the 100 IM. On the boys side, you would need to be under 29 in the 50 free and under 1:16 in the 100 IM. We generally get a much higher turnout on the girls side so we might have to make deeper cuts on the girls side.
We will announce the team and speak to all new swimmers at the end of practice on the last day of tryouts. I know it seems like a short try out but with Thanksgiving we have very little time before our first meet in early December.

Eligibility
On the first official day of practice, a bus will leave Somerset Hills YMCA at 3:10 outside the new gym at Ridge. Coaches will not be on board taking attendance so you need to be on time so you don't miss the bus. Mrs. Schroeder, the athletics assistant, will be outside directing athletes which bus is for the swim team. I will be waiting for the team to arrive at SHY. When you get to the pool, please go into the locker rooms. You need to use the youth section of the locker room and do not leave your belongings laying around the locker room. Either bring a lock, or bring your bags out on the pool deck.
Once you arrive, I will have a list posted of swimmers who are eligible to try out. This list is solely based on whether or not your physical paperwork has been submitted and approved by the athletic office. I do not handle physicals, they have to go through the athletic office. There is no exception to this: If your physical has not been approved, I will not let you in the water. If you can't try out, you can't make the team - so get your paperwork in on time!
Your physical paperwork should be submitted to the athletic office by November 1st so that there is time to process your paperwork. Information regarding physicals is below. Here is a link to information about physicals: http://ridgehigh.bernardsboe.com/sports
If you are a freshman or a junior please make sure you complete a cognitive impact test.

Pre Season Meeting
I will hold a pre season meeting in early October in room 630 or room 624 at Ridge to go over all of the requirements for joining the swim team. At that meeting, I will provide you with information about joining the team. Please listen for announcements at Ridge.
In addition, it is incredibly helpful to have an idea of who is trying out before the season begins. Please complete the form below if you are a new swimmer interested in trying out.
